Last night, I received an e-mail from our university's immigration service, notifying us international students that the DHS has just issued new immigration rules, limiting student visas to a fixed four-year period. Extensions are possible but not guaranteed. #fun 🤷🏻‍♀️

A follow-up event to Trump's international "antifa summit" is planned in Germany. The country where the far-right AfD, a party that poses a threat to democracy, is leading the polls.

This "summit" only serves to further spread and reinforce the narrative of a "dangerous far left" and to set a precedent for further crackdowns on political opponents. Any government that takes the protection of democracy seriously should boycott this. But the German government helps normalise it.

Vor kurzem wurde nun auch Eva Vlaardingerbroek, die rechtsextreme Aktivistin und Gründerin des "Save Europe Act" (dessen Co-Founder Martin Sellner ist), auf dem FPÖ-Radiosender "Austria First" interviewt. Wie lange noch, bis sie Sellner selbst einladen?

Auch schön hier zu sehen, Phillip H., ehemaliger Auf1-"Journalist" und nun Direktor von Sellners "Institute for Remigration", der anscheinend regelmäßig gewisse Leute aus der AfD trifft und auf Tour geht, um das Sellner-Institut auf internationalen Rechtsaußen-Konferenzen zu repräsentieren.

Habe mir vor Kurzem erlaubt, öffentlich etwas Ähnliches zu sagen, nämlich dass progressive/demokratische Parteien ein positives Zukunftsnarrativ brauchen, nicht immer auf Rechtsaußen reagieren und die Themenlage bestimmen lassen sollen. Was soll ich sagen, die Reaktion war, gelinde gesagt, lauwarm.

I just recently talked to somebody about exactly this problem – the Austrian far-right FPÖ can radicalise further and further because, unlike Germany, there seems to be no proper legal basis to ban them even if they present a threat to democracy.

Local elections in Graz today. 🇦🇹🗳️ Graz is an interesting case. It's the second-largest city in Austria and the capital of the Austrian state of Styria. The city is governed by the far-left Communist Party (KPÖ) and the state by the far-right Freedom Party (FPÖ).

At this point, I could write a whole book on why it makes no sense to "challenge" far-right figures and why "Entzauberung" never works, supported by numerous rhetorical analyses and examples. I will add it to the already very long list of things to write for the next pandemic.

Just leaving this here as another example: Mehdi Hasan meets the AfD's Krah on Al Jazeera's "Head to Head" to, I don't know, discuss whether the AfD is a threat to democracy, because surely he'll have an unbiased opinion on that. Krah is introduced as "one of the AfD's most controversial figures".

So far, I have seen next to no proper reporting on the most recent Alliance for Responsible Citizenship (ARC) conference in London, which brought together far-right and "conservative" actors from politics, business, think tanks, and the extreme-right activist scene.

Man darf diese vermeintlich eigenartigen Anfragen von Rechtsaußen nicht unterschätzen. Im Endeffekt zielt es darauf ab, Argumente der "Ersetzungsmigration" rechtsextremer Akteure zu untermauern und zu behaupten, dass Migranten staatlich gefördert zu viele Kinder bekämen, um Einheimische zu ersetzen.
