Every time I read a study on the performance of "agentic" AI, I think of the experiment where they tried to get an AI to design a robot that can walk, but it never did because it figured out building a really tall robot that immediately falls over is a cheaper way to maximise distance travelled.

So far AI is causing me more work. One of my main responsibilities is to use a database to find certain things. This database used to have humans look at the webpage of a thing and then write a description. Bad AI descriptions have led to an increase in false positives I need to sift through.

My fellow faculty know that every so often the faculty email list will blow up. And that this often happens at the end of the semester, when people have a bit more time after grading. Right now, ours is blowing up with an argument about AI and electronics in the classroom. 🧵

The White House has been caught. The administration inserted a photo of Bill Clinton, Michael Jackson, and Diana Ross into the Epstein files and falsely implied it showed them with victims. In reality, it’s a publicly available fundraiser photo featuring Jackson and Ross’s own children.

Amazing how many of these papers are about “ethical use of AI in education.” It’s harsh, I know, but I do think if you incorporate a hallucinated reference it should be incredibly damning for you. There should be professional penalties.

It’s the entire point. There’s no plan to make this meaningful for students. No plan to use it administratively. Its design and implementation signals its only real intent. It’s best and easiest use case is for systematic harassment and to scare faculty into complying in advance.

I’m sorry, but it is disgraceful to be an academic who uses this technology to conduct research. It should be prohibited in all of our scholarly institutions, including universities and journals.
