A giant in my field, the mentor of so many Spanish scientists, and an inspiration for me. Reading his Scientific American article on Compartments in Development as an undergraduate set me on the path I follow today!

A political system that has challenges but is not run by or for oligarchs, a justice system that is truly non-partisan, a taxation system that unashamedly tries to redistribute some wealth to those less well off, a social net that is strained but works hard, an accessible education system.

A note to the rest of the world: it's Canada Day tomorrow. We celebrate what's great about the world, the beautiful country we get to call home, the diversity of our population, the heat and the 🥶, the things that matter such as universal healthcare, a culture that sees guns as lethal weapons.
