On rejection in academia, for those dealing with it — like me: it’s not easy to keep going in the face of rejection. It is easy to feel like a “failure” and normal to worry about “if not this then what next?” Nothing can change the pain, but I hope you can at least be proud of yourself for trying.

before I started my lab, I asked several senior PIs what their one piece of advice would be and PI pointedly said: “Know when to drop a project.” And that advice has been invaluable in my lab. There are always other projects to follow up on, dropping one isn’t a failure in and of itself.

Great advice received as a postdoc: Do the easiest thing. I was 3 years into my postdoc and juggling projects w/nothing concrete = career crisis I went to my advisor Paul Sternberg for help. He asked what was going on & what mutant had the strongest phenotype. "Clone the easiest one." It worked.

This is why actual knowledge - not just Jeopardy-style recitation of flashcard facts - is collaborative. If I need to understand something so far outside of my realm of expertise that I can’t get far enough reading solo, I figure out who’d know more, and have *gasp* a conversation…with a human being

Hey all, I reached out to the PO of my NIGMS MIRA to ask if the gov't shut down, and rescheduling of study sections, might allow for some accommodation to the standard rule that PIs cannot resubmit a MIRA while their MIRA (or other RPG) is under review (waiting in scores or summary statements) 🧪

Doing a PhD is - at heart - one long discussion with your mentor. The discussion changes over time - with unexpected turns and ups & downs - but through it all is a pair of people discussing a topic endlessly to make sense of it. PhD students: choose someone you like to talk to!

I always tell my pre-PhD mentees: the first 2 years of PhD are brutal time-wise and workload-wise, the last 3 years are brutal *emotionally*. You will question everything. Lean on your support system - peers and mentors- during these times. I wouldn't have gotten through without them.

Getting rejected from a seminar where I was really hoping to present. In the later stages of grad school it's such a strange feeling, making you doubt everything you have done. Its almost making feel like I am not good enough and am not ready for the next career stages 🤷🏽‍♀️☹️ #gradlife #rejection
