If students are simply uninterested in the core bargain of a class like this, it’s hard to know what to do. You teach the material because you think it’s important they know it; they don’t give a shit, but want the credential; and the university wants their money. Your main option is “pretend”.

Dear peer reviewers everywhere: sometimes we feel pressure to find issues with a submission as a demonstration of diligence. But we have to recognise this is a mistake: picking random and sometimes incoherent holes in research add confusion, generates unnecessary work and encourages defensive

You also don't have to do an editor's job of deciding if a paper "fits" or is "impactful enough" for their journal, because you're a scientist and not a marketing agent for the publisher.

During my postdoc I was trying to move to a new area, my supervisor said: you have to go to a conference, it's the only way to learn what they are thinking and what the key questions are. He was completely right. Science is a collective and social human pursuit, not a bunch of pdfs online

What is the goal of doing science at a university? For me 1. increase human understanding of the world, 2. train future human scientists. Note *human* in both. Papers are a (necessary) corollary (esp for those scientists-in-training to get jobs), but let's not have the tail wag the dog

If p < 0.05, you "reject the null." That's what many stats courses teach you to do. This week's Experimentology chapter argues that this binary, dichotomous frame can sometimes be useful but is the wrong default for psych experiments — there is a broader toolkit available! 🧵

The rise of larger vehicles like SUVs and pickup trucks, with their taller hoods and larger blind zones, has contributed to a 75% increase in pedestrian and cyclist deaths since 2009. Until we design better streets and ban these vehicles, people outside these vehicles will keep dying.

Uh I think maybe we actually have to sit down with the students and say the words out loud, I’m not sure they know : handing in or passing off AI work as your own (i.e. unattributed) constitutes academic fraud.
