Previous Mayor Chris Coleman ended his tenure with 16 FTEs in the Mayor’s office which feels right for a strong mayor city of 300,000 souls. Melvin started his tenure in 2018 with 15 FTEs and his proposed budget for 2026 allocates funds for 13.

So it’s budget season and folks are talking about the city’s money naturally and an old canard that I’ve hand waved away for a few years came up again. It’s the “Melvin Carter bloated the Mayor’s office staff with all his friends!” one. And it caught me wrong this year so I dug into it:
