Sorry, I get REALLY mad about this, because I have friends whose lives and careers would be in much better places had they not been fleeced by their publishing partners. So many administrative-side folks claim to love the medium but don't golden rule the folks who make it, and who trust them.

Smaller publishers like to tout this as a fairer & more equitable means of reaping the reward for a successful book, but it's SO easy to game the numbers. If a cartoonist you like was with one publisher consistently for a while, then switched? They probably found out the pub was skimming their due.
