In 2021, Alabama Republicans pushed a state constitutional amendment barring the legislature from making changes to how elections are run less than 6 months before the election. The sponsor said it was to "keep the supermajority from passing a law that would benefit" them too late in the game. 👀

Virginia Democrats won't try to resurrect their redistricting plans at all this year. Why? Because the Virginia Department of Elections' computer system is old and there's not enough time to put new districts into the system. Okay then.

this is the closest I've ever come to actually suggesting a "one neat trick" suggestion for anything, but I'm so serious here. the Virginia Constitution gives the legislature the power to set retirement ages for judges "REGARDLESS OF THE TERM TO WHICH ELECTED OR APPOINTED." make it 54 right now.

Also two key differences 1. In OH they basically ran out the clock in a game of chicken with the court when no map existed, they can't do that here because the election can just proceed under old lines 2. In FL the court is most likely going to rule in favor of the map.

Michigan Dems *hold* the narrowly divided state Senate, as Democrat Chedrick Greene defeats Republican Jason Tunney. They reclaim the 20-18 advantage they first won in the 2022 elections. However, every seat in the chamber will be up again in November, and Greene & Tunney are headed for a rematch.

Why is it always a problem that liberals are over-represented in higher education or media but it's not a problem that conservatives are over-represented in the military or law enforcement? What's the military doing to solve its catastrophic viewpoint discrimination problem?

This is partisanship at its rawest. SCOTUS has clamped down on lower courts for rulings that could alter maps many *months* before an election—even when those maps have been judged illegal. Here, it's rushing to let the Louisiana GOP change a map *while an election is underway.*

Reminder that Florida voters passed a Constitutional amendment in 2010 banning gerrymandering with 62% of the vote and the Florida GOP just stole the courts and ignored it. By contrast retaliatory gerrymanders in CA and VA passed with the approval of voters. Yet media portrays them as equivalent.

I am very skeptical that Jeff Landry has the statutory authority to declare an "emergency" and delay elections. The enabling statute quite obviously contemplates a natural disaster. That said, gubernatorial invocations of "emergencies" are often given great deference by the courts. A quick thread:

"the state has a constitutionally protected interest in protecting incumbents from electoral challenge" is the ultimate example of something you have to go to law school in order to have your brain broken enough to even hear. a normal person would hear that as unintelligible gibberish. an antimeme
