This. This is why I keep a good news binder of emails and cards. I read through it often. There is a lot to deal with in education now. But I know I am making a difference, changing lives. That’s not a little thing.

Rereading it, I see just how much higher level vocabulary I was exposed to in reading comics, something I preach about often. I have compiled a list of this vocabulary in just this one story. Excitement and engagement kept me reading. The built-in scaffolding of image and text helped make meaning.

Happy book birthday to
@katemessner.com
and
@falynnk.bsky.social
! A zany and imaginative story with a wild twist of an ending. Important lessons on friendship and not being quick to judge others. Heartfelt and hilarious.

How I opened classes today. In honors world history - we are watching Swing Kids and discussing the history of music as protest and youth counter culture. In AP World History, we are using Avatar as an introduction to Imperialism - both historic and current.

Idea for my ELA friends…. What about having students create a hero or villain from a vocabulary word? What’s their origin story? How does connect to the meaning of the word? Can you create a story in prose or comics about this character? In this case - Harbinger and Pariah…

Overheard in AP World History as we read this awesomeness - “I’ve never liked or read comics, but these visuals really help me understand this hard text.” “Do you think Marx would really act like this? I thought he’d be nicer and meeker…”

Been telling my students and parents exactly this point. Want to be a better reader? You have to read. What to be a better writer? You have to read. Analytical reading and writing is the most important skill we can teach and model. We are all teachers of reading.

My kids annotated WW1 poetry. Then spent two days reading through books about WW1. Then created their own original poems/visuals. Low tech/no tech and deep, original thinking. Love seeing kids get to show off their strengths in ways not always offered. Also a great support for my ELA colleagues.

the HiLo universe expands! Loved this story -full of zaniness, hilarity, but also tough issues such as navigating cancer. 12 year olds know how difficult the changes in life throw their way -but imagine turning into a monster- actually a hero! Accepting who you are is central part of this story.

Love that this is written like a script -will encourage readers, like my own son, who love music &script writing. I’ve never read a book quite like it. Family is truly who you make it. I’d begin my school book club w/ what would a movie about your life be like? Write it

hardest part of writing a book is organizing thoughts. Getting random notes I left for myself on my Phone & Docs organized. Creating cohesive theme to run throughout & tie it together. Finally sat down tonight w/my wife and hashed out the organization. Next is officially pitching it/getting contract
