Trying to find teacher comments for an upcoming ASD assessment. Good news is my parents kept a lot of my school books. Bad news is there are ZERO WRITTEN COMMENTS in them. 😅 What a different time in teaching, eh? (I am a fan of whole class feedback and minimal written markkng, btw. Just very funny)

The fact that we're seeing high levels of learners with SEND being excluded atm isn't because 'the behaviour leads to the label'. It's because something about the way the system is operating isn't working well to meet needs. The behaviours may be unacceptable but the answer isn't to reject them. 5/5

We don't have large numbers of YP 'getting identified with a SEND *because of* inappropriate behaviour'. We look at the mismatch between the YP and the environment and try to figure out the 'why' behind the behaviours. This is what people mean when they say that 'behaviour is communication'. 4/5

I have been reading all the "students these days" threads from various sides and I have an essay's worth of thoughts -- there's a lot of complexity and heterogeneity that is hard to communicate on social media. There are a couple of things I will say here though. 1/

I have no conclusion. The whole system, and all the systems it is embedded in, is broken.

Meanwhile, teaching is being undermined and devlaued at our institutions in a frankly historically dangerous way, and as an underpaid contract instructor, having to spend more time and emotional energy finding ways to get through to my students for the same low pay is not sustainable. /8

It takes me 3x as long to grade assignments now, because I have to explain gently and effectively why ChatGPT style writing is boring -- they swim in this stuff now even when they don't use the tools. Maybe no one has even told them their own voice matters, so that is down to us. 3/

One is that teaching university students *well* requires much more work (and frankly, compassion) now than it did when I started nine years ago. 2/
