Resisting the temptation to go back to older classics as so many great contemporary books. My pick for a big yammer #LessonsInChemistry by #BonnieGarmus which revisits struggles by women in typically male roles set in the 1960s. It is a surprising story line which includes heartbreak & resilience.

For a long while it was The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Chabon. Kidlit is a bit dated…Dark Is Rising Sequence, Mortal Engines, the Changes trilogy. Non-fiction is On Savage Shores (just to help @carolinepennock.bsky.social get to a stage where she’s on royalties!)

The Poisonwood Bible. I'm usually really reticent about book recommendations - it's so personal, my favourites are so, so *mine*. But it was just wonderful...

Stoner by Williams and McMurtry’s Lonesome Dove. Few books have drawn their characters so vividly. For sense of place and society, probably Annie John by Kincaid and Wide Sargasso Sea by Rhys. My fave genre is coming of age, so Boy’s Life by MacCammon, It by King, and Dandelion Wine by Bradbury.

I think you are; I can't handle anything too sad (I am never reading A Little Life), but O'Farrell's writing is so GORGEOUS and it's just so well-told. I definitely cried, but it wasn't in the "I am utterly broken now" way.
