When I'm asked how have I sustained my career as a published author since 1999, nowadays my answer is 'sheer bloody minded refusal to quit'. Plus a supportive husband whose salary pays the bread and butter bills while my writing income is the family jam budget. Yes, I recognise that's privilege.

They enjoy telling others “you are superfluous”. “Your work can be done better without you”. “Your protests are meaningless”. The fact that the process of translation (or illustration, or writing…) is being reduced to valueless activity is, for them, a bonus. They’re glad.

And yet we are being replaced, willy-nilly, regardless of whether machines can or should replace us: it’s happening. And the people applauding it, for whatever reason, are gleeful. Not only do they not care what repercussions may be for other people: they ENJOY stirring up distress.

We translate books because reading, writing, creating, sharing with others, bridging cultures and communicating are human activities that give us a reason to live. Take the human element out, and what even is the point? Why do it if humans are not enjoying the process or the product?

I’m regarded as though what bothers me is whether I, personally, will be able to make living wages through translation in future. That’s actually not what alarms me. I never made living wages from translation to begin with, it is a notoriously undervalued activity. We don’t do it for the money.

This happens in discussions online and in person. Generally the people are not themselves translators or decision makers in the field, these are their opinions based on media and hype. But it boils down to “suck it up, buttercup” whenever the topic comes up. My being a translator VOIDS my opinion.

I can give countless examples of failure points of machine translation. If I give real examples that I’ve encountered I’m told they are “anecdotal”. If I discuss principles that will consistently fail, I’m told that it’s “just a matter of time” before the solutions will magically appear.

The thing that depresses me in the whole AI revolution in my industry (I’m a literary translator and publisher) is that the question is not whether machines can replace human translators, but how will we deal with the fallout after machines are forcibly introduced regardless.
