I've already given Twitch more than enough info to verify my identity independently, (e.g. they have my business registration info, among a ton of other info), so this is insulting, on top of being a massive invasion of privacy and huge risk of identity theft. 3/4

I don't know how many people are being required to do this, but it's gross that Twitch has any connection to Persona, let alone requiring new Affiliates to give themselves over to mass surveillance. In case it's relevant, I'm Canadian, and Persona and Twitch are U.S. companies. 2/4

Twitch is requiring new Affiliates, before their first payment, to give government photo ID and a separate photo to Persona, the same Persona that has connections to government mass surveillance programs. Mental illness diagnoses aren't warning flags for harmful people (and treating them as such is extremely harmful and dangerous). Also, knowing one or two mentally ill people does not make you an expert on mental illness. No, not even if they harmed you.

Instead of thinking "hmm maybe being powerful and wealthy and also a member of other very privileged demographics might tend to certain conditioned behaviors".

Another reason it's a problem to blame mental illness for harmful social behaviors is it gives people a false understanding of where those behavior patterns come from. Like looking at the exploitative behavior patterns of powerful, wealthy white cis men and deciding they must be mentally ill.

I've encountered a lot of people who are strongly resistant to the idea that they can be harmful because they're good people and only bad people are harmful. Slapping a psychiatric diagnosis on harmful behaviors just reinforces that idea that only Other People's behavior needs to be examined.

The first one is, as mentioned, it reaffirms a lot of people's beliefs that Harmful People Have Something Wrong With Them. And obviously if I'm a Good Person and There's Nothing Wrong With Me, then I'm not capable of being harmful.

There's a reason other than harm to mentally ill people that medicalizing harmful social behavior (i.e. slapping a psychiatric diagnosis on a harmful person) is a big problem. That problem is—it makes it harder for us to actually deal with the real issues. In a couple of ways.

Especially when there are obvious and clear benefits people get from harmful social behavior. Like more money. And more power. Literally it's so weird to try and slap a diagnosis on people who have learned there are tangible benefits to being harmful.

I will always point these things out because IME folks overestimate the validity of a lot of popular ideas from psychology without considering how much bias and assumption goes into formulating those ideas.

Many Eurocentric ("Western") psychology concepts simply /do not translate/ to more distantly related cultures. This includes IQ tests, which have a ton of cultural bias. IOW, many concepts of psychology are not getting at fundamental and universal things about humanity.

I mean no one has a sociopathy dx because it's not a dx in the DSM or ICD. Also I am /very/ skeptical of any psychiatric diagnosis that is primarily about social behavior because psychology is notably shit at analyzing social behavior in context.

And they're not wrong that many psychiatric diagnoses do function (and have functioned) exactly that way. Including homosexuality, which. It's worth understanding that psychiatric diagnosis criteria are determined by people who have their own agendas. And without input from people with the dx.

It makes it clear that they view the purpose of psychiatric dx as marking out "deviants" with a label that also serves as a statement of disapproval (and potentially, based on historical and contemporary treatment of mentally ill people, justification for various forms of cruelty).

I should explain though why people should be aware that when they proclaim a behavior in others they don't like—even an antisocial, harmful behavior, yes—is/should be considered mental illness, they're saying a lot about how they view mentally ill people and the purpose of psychiatric dx.

As someone with mental disabilities; I know it's hard to retrain your rhetoric but PLEASE stop using mental disabilities as a signifier of evil people. We desperately need to stop associating bad people with having mental health struggles. It stigmatizes disabilities, especially ASPD and NPD.

This. I know some many psych system survivors and Mad people with diagnoses who are very involved in social justice and liberatory work, whose capacity to go back to a society that wronged them and give back from a place of love.

Yes, exactly. Every time it comes up, when certain rich and powerful people are labeled with one or another diagnoses, it also seems like those who do it mean disabled people should not have positions of trust in society.

I just saw a massively popular social justice account use BPD as an insult. The way folks feel entitled to do this with what are deeply personal, painful, and often trauma-linked diagnoses is quite honestly cruel. A lot of folks mock the idea of ableism, let alone sanism, but it's very real.

The way some of your faves use psychiatric diagnoses as insults and signifiers of bad people is... Folks, we've got to internalize, collectively, that being a shitty person is not a psychiatric disorder and that sane people are fully capable of doing harm. Even intentionally.

one of the issues with generative AI or any of the ML implementations that depend on massive datasets is that a couple of things get dragged along/implicated just to get off the ground: - massively intensive resource usage - data theft - capital/political power mobilization to justify the expenses

This report, led by @ketanjoshi.co, refutes Big Tech's claim that future AI tech will provide climate benefits that justify present-day climate harms from data centers. Those harms are avoidable, but only if tech ramps up efficiency & renewables and stops attempting to justify its fossil buildout.

My spiciest take is that is AI is gross and nothing you’re doing with it can justify the damage it does to the environment and art. It should be shunned.
