Almost got hit twice today by cars right on red-ing without looking for pedestrians. Different intersections but both time the light had just gone green for me and they were racing to beat the oncoming traffic. Any Australian who thinks we should have the equivalent hates pedestrians

This is a fantastic thread about what #wintercycling is and isn't. It's not extreme, but it does add challenges that don't exist in other seasons. I love the point that snow is different from rain because rain disappears, and snow/ice can remain a problem for weeks or months if not addressed.

Here's our president! It's not the cold, it's not even the gear. It's whether the infrastructure is safe. Safety begins with separated bike lanes which are properly plowed. The best standard is established in Oulu, Finland. @pekkatahkola.bsky.social can speak to what a municipality can do.

I am starting my third winter bike commuting right here in Edmonton. It has changed my life for the better. I kept my bike parked at home only about 15 work days last year. Winter biking is fantastic - even in Yeg!

It’s not as bad as most people think! Last January I challenged myself to ride my bike every day for a month and it was doable. Our average temp for that month is only -10C.

This can't be understated! The new mayor of Edmonton is a year round (yes, even in winter!!!) cyclist. And my ward elected a councillor who was a city transit operator. I have high hopes for what this council means for active transportation and transit. #yegcc

There should be reverse Strava heat maps. Those spaces women don't go at certain times of day or year (or at all)? Don't build active travel infrastructure through them. If women can't run around a park/down a road at night fearless then they'll not cycle through there as part of a journey either.
