Genuinely baffled by the wailing and pearl clutching about Maria Steen not being on the ballot. Why are people acting like she was basically owed the nomination, or we are obliged to have her on the ballot? She started her campaign like 5 minutes before the deadline and failed, she is owed nothing.

People have been able to get nominated in previous elections, those tended to have a record of doing something in the community or are known. So the process works. It just doesn't work if you're an extremist or have no record of doing anything positive for the community.

There were 7 nominees in 2011, six in 2018. The nomination system works. If a candidate can't get on the ballot, it's pretty much their own fault for not being a strong enough candidate.

The reason I'm concerned about Maria Steen being on the ballot isn't that she will win (she won't). My worry is that if she is nominated, it will mean a month of national airtime for a hate campaign against vulnerable groups, carried by a media too scared of being sued to call it what it is

When I tell people "I don't believe in people being bad, I believe people do bad things" many of them get the wrong idea. They think I mean nobody is irredeemable. Just the opposite. I think nobody can hide behind a state or destiny of badness, bad people are bad because of their choices alone.
