Sometimes fantasy authors clearly want to use a certain name but they can't because it doesn't sound fantasy enough so they change it a little to make it world appropriate. I tend to ignore that and just call Keyan "Kevin" in my head.

Been thinking about this as I go through my submission package on a project. Possible words some people might trip over on the first page include tolerable, egalitarian, and pater. I could perhaps use simpler, more familiar words, but then it wouldn't be my book, it'd be someone else's.

anecdotally, I'm seeing a lot of fandom friends get comments on their fics that are like "I don't like X, Y, Z about this fic", often relating to more complicated characterizations or stylistic choices. the customer-servicey let-me-speak-to-your-manager approach to art really troubles me.

Who among us didn't pronounce it "hyperbowl" because we first encountered it in print before ever hearing it? It's a whole thing! There's probably a word for it! That I'd have to look up! (Incidentally my phone autocorrected it back to "hyperbole". Everyone's a critic!)

Agreed. Having millions paying attention to you all at once is MASSIVELY overrated. Personally, I'm a big fan/advocate (and minor example) of the 1,000 True Fans model of survival. kk.org/thetechnium/... You don't need to go viral to survive as a creative. In fact, I'd argue you don't want that.
