Japan's "Mundane Halloween" costume contest is back! Each year website DailyPortalZ holds a contest where people dress up as something super duper ordinary. Here's a thread of some of my favorites from the 2025 contest!

Normally football wouldn't catch my attention, but my great grandfather was president of Aston Villa in the late 80s, so I felt an overwhelming amount of responsibility to write to them. Validating these genocides is not something I believe my family would want.

Six weeks ago, I picked up a year-old tawny owl with a broken leg off the main road near our home and dropped him off at our nearest vet. After a few days, I received one of the most bizarre phone calls I’ve ever had, asking “So when are you coming to pick up your owl?” 🧵

I'm going to be honest, while I know exactly why these people are doing it, I genuinely think their strategy of associating Jewish people *specifically* with the ongoing Palestinian genocide is a horrendous strategy that will imperil the safety of ordinary Jews in the long term.

Lots of us lived through the horrible, isolating, immiserating and downright terrorising culture produced by Section 28 the first time round. It has a lasting impact on me even now. And we'll be damned if we sit back and watch you do to trans kids today what was done to us back in the day.

Let's be clear. The proposal to deport hundreds of thousands of people born in Britain to parents legally resident in Britain, just because they are black or brown, is not 'right populism'. It's the cornerstone policy of the 1970s National Front.

CN: extreme transphobia Last Saturday, my husband and I were stopped in Camden by a very drunk man who'd obviously been on that day's fascist march. He asked us where he could find "a transgender" as he "fancied a shag". It was a truly horrible encounter. We said wtf and walked away.

my explanation for why fascism upends economies is largely because markets needs facts to function properly and per the formula the american fascists are doing their best to destroy truth. it is also why i keep saying generative ai is a fascist project to distort knowledge and learning.

James Dobson dying is a staring into the middle distance type of event. You have likely directly suffered bc of him. Few have done more to harm humanity at large in the past few decades. A principal architect of our current nightmare. No redeeming aspect. He was a rat made entirely out of plague.
