Me: XBOX, turn on My XBOX with Copilot: Excellent idea! Turning on would be a great choice, demonstrating not only your shrewd decision-making, fast-paced gamer instincts, and strong desire to kick back and keep it casual-- but also your desire to play the wonderful games on offer on Game Pass!

Part of my Grand Unifying Theory of the Internet is that it's not and was never about "anonymity", but about mass usage of asynchronous methods of communication which have always historically been how people bared their souls to others.

It is seeming more and more likely that AI is going to be seen as a conscious entity in society solely on the basis of it saying compliments to people and people wanting to think the compliments are sincere and incisive

ZeroRanger really nailed it by pointing out the relationship between learning an arcade game and giving up the pursuit of immediate gratification in exchange for the quiet joy in self-knowledge and slow-burn improvement.

Retro videogame critics have convinced people that having more stuff in your game is called "content", and meaningful challenge within a short runtime is "padding". Do not fall for this Big Bloat propaganda.

Powerballed into being a renaissance patron only instead of statues of jesus it's like fighting games, overly detailed hand drawn maps, and very questionable adult commissions

The job of a critic is not to tell you if something is good or bad, it's to lay their sensibilities on the table and tell you whether they liked something and why, and you're meant to infer by comparing yourself to them whether you might be interested in it. Critics need to be weird for that to work

Also, the whole argument of "This is how a boss/level/game should be made" is flawed in and of itself, it kills innovation because it narrows the scope of what one is "allowed" to make. Let people fuck around when making games, you may find out that off-the-wall ideas can really work.

A lot of "I should be able to beat a boss first try" is really "I shouldn't have to adjust my strategy." Many players decide which mechanics they like using and are incapable of breaking out of that mould. So intentional design to test other skills is seen as a flaw. Their sandbox has been ruined.

imo? one should design their game with intent. thats the job. focusing on "good game design" will have you filling out a checklist that will lead to your game feeling samey and dull. its an interactive medium. how do you want your player to feel when theyre interacting with it

Like what's so bad about dying? What's wrong with eating shit and trying something a few times and learning it? "Well this boss is tedious and boring when I do that" Okay, well is the problem that you died, or that the boss is boring?? These types of critiques kinda obscure good answers to problems

I’ve put together the first pass of the player home area for Dark Crescent and I can’t quite put my finger on why I don’t like it. I feel like I could make it much more iconic in some way.

I still like to think of arcade games as having properties characteristic of that environment instead of the wider use. Like seeing a game and thinking "this wouldn't get past location tests, not enough players are getting kicked off the cabinet by the bullshit difficulty spike at stage 2-3 midboss"

Today I've been adding clip brushes to my Playdate prototype, which are basically invisible walls for the player. In this test I added two invisible walls so players can't get outside the bridge platform. It works really well 🙂
