making a list of gamest issues with gradius 1 coverage and lol there was a three issue break between the publication of the loop 3 stages 5 & 6 recovery patterns and the loop 3 stage 7 recovery patterns. i like to imagine it took them 3 full months to figure this shit out (from issue 25)

Even after 130hrs, it's hard not to keep playing Gradius.... I'm slowly getting better at loop 2 recoveries, but dying on or before 2-4 still usually means the run will end on 2-4. Same with 3-4 when i make it to loop 3.

it's frustrating when, for example, in a platformer, there's a really hard jump right at the end of the level. so you can come up with game design rules like don't put hard jumps at the end of the level, put something that looks scary but is actually easy to make the player feel good, etc.

the other reason i'm kinda ehhh about to trying to good game design your way into making runbacks more enjoyable is because if you simply don't give a fuck you end up with stuff like the capra demon fight. and the capra demon fight is really funny

runback woes are kind of just one example of "having to repeat something easy before you get another attempt at something hard" which is everywhere, everywhere in difficult video games, i don't think you can really get rid of it without just getting rid of long-form challenges altogether
