i can't seem to get into action games (shmup) lately, i play one run and die early and quit.... i think dragon quest 3 hit because failure is mostly a result of attrition or bad luck rather than poor play, easier to throw myself at it for hours compared to action games where my performance matters

i still don't know where i sit on making your game torturous intentionally (i.e. the designer themselves feels tortured) as opposed to the torture sections arising kind of circumstantially from things like time constraints, lack of foresight, and differences in human preference and skill

i've made various games that contain a grueling torture hell section, and i often feel bad when people play those sections and get frustrated with them, but my experiences with dragon quest 2, void stranger, unlimited saga, etc. makes me think those parts are what i like most about video games.
