Every conservative person is afraid of the nearest town that is larger than their hometown. It’s not just Portland, Chicago, etc. It’s Pine Bluff, Little Rock.

We need to figure out what is convincing so many centrist or even liberal thinkers that Trump's voters embody the essential spirit of the country in a way that Democrats do not.

"Democracy dies if prominent black writers don't frame their arguments around appeasing white voters in Wisconsin," or "Democracy dies unless liberal writers praise radical, hateful conservative activists" is the subtext. And it's worth thinking through who makes these kinds of arguments and why.
