Just had an interesting chat with a neighbor teenager about three things we have in common. I was afraid my ‘me too’ would make him feel tainted by my age. But no. I saw him feel seen, and more, I saw him realize that one of the Big Things plaguing him now might not be the biggest deal ever.

Decades ago I’m a guest in the dining room at a fancy culinary school. The soup was a broth with three tiny dumplings—amazing!—and I sensed it was not okay to wave off other courses in trade for more soup. But it was like you’re in a museum being hurried along. Don’t dawdle at this one stunner. :(

Is it just me or is there a thing where a guy says the Right Thing at the Right Moment and we all cheer but then seconds later he swallows his tongue because he’s realized Saying the Right Thing might make people expect him to Do something slightly correct-adjacent? It’s disappointing if true.

Street sweepers and switchboard operators and gas pump jockeys all got told to suck it up and retrain when we didn’t need that job anymore. These ICE guys can retrain for any number of useful jobs should they so desire.

Every single person serving in congress is old enough to remember a time before ICE. A time before DHS was invented in panicked response to 9/11/01. It’s not hard to reinvent the whole notion of what Keeping Americans Safe looks like. We’ve done it more than once in my lifetime.

A little follow-up about calling my Senators and Rep: they get a lot of calls and voicemails from me. Usually I’m pushing, not complaining. On a day like today, staff if working Hard, and I know their offices get regular scary threats. I always extend good wishes and thanks.

So I called my senators and house rep with my frustrated yawp of rage and sorrow. Got to talk to a couple aides and leave one voicemail. Then saw that @robinkelly.house.gov is introducing impeachment for Noem, so I called back asking my Rep to support her. Aide gave me a nice atta girl.

So, the frog stopped the National Guard from coming to Portland, along with astute lawsuits by Oregon. Only part of what's happening, but hard to understate how fundamentally the Portland Frog changed perceptions and helped morale. Humor, imagination, courage, savvy.
