Visual art is 80% learning to see. That means not only learning how to see, understand and evaluate the world around you, the human figure etc. But it also means learning to see, understand and evaluate your own work. Seeing is the hardest part to teach and the hardest part to learn.

I've been getting some emails from supposed international publishers claiming to be putting out foreign language versions of a book I did some illustrations for, and asking for rights permission and what my usage fee would be. I'm afraid they're scams! Does anyone know anything about this??

I agree with Jay’s takes in this thread. But because I’m a jerk, I do think editors should know how to flat, color, ink, letter, write, and most importantly retouch (manga specific), even if they aren’t good. I can’t make a request if I don’t know the process of what I’m asking. Shadowbox first.

Trying so hard to finally get some inking done before Christmas that I was willing to fight through my brush pen dumping rivers of ink with every line. Until I stuck my hand in it and smeared it across the entire panel, ruining it completely. Noted. No work is getting done today.

Cantonese update: I am too motivated to be deterred by the idea of sucking at it, as it turns out. Actually kind of enjoying speaking shakily and working to get it right. Also surprisingly really enjoying sharing the experience with my husband since we both love talking about language anyway.

Certain recent events have made me realize how deeply I regret not making an actual effort to learn Cantonese, and I feel filled with resolve to do it but also completely lost as to how to start in an effective way. Can't exactly grab a textbook and learn a complex tonal language from 0.
