A hot bank holiday weekend perhaps hottest on record becomes clear. I am >90% sure we’ll see 30C broken in capital, it will be first time since 2005. I would also give a 50% chance we see record high May temperatures. Heathrow’s oldest record of 31.7C from May 1953 to beat.

Just a quick look at a cross-section of temperature trends in the lower atmosphere during the month of May. The bottom of the y-axis is the lower troposphere, and the upper portion is reaching into the stratosphere. The x-axis is latitude. Data is provided by ERA5.

Very interesting paper teasing out the nuances of flood risk distribution in the US using an incredible individual-level dataset. Documents a huge concentration of flood risk among the very highest income group - lots of wealthy people enjoying the coast and river views from their second homes.

Back in 2012 we did a figure comparing historical emissions to previous generations of emission scenarios.

Surprisingly, the figure is still doing the rounds. We update it every year, with many interesting changes primarily due to revisions in land-use change emissions. 1/
