The sort of evil that has a government with multiple nazi scandals and even international racism scandals to its name, and a literal nazi pedophile as the Minister of Social Affairs and Health. Finns are fucking horrible people on average, and I'm saying this as a Finn.

Now, I'm no doctor. I am but a humble transgender science journalist. But maybe, just maybe, doctors should copy the approach of countries whose research shows good results in these patients, not places like Finland where the results are bad?

The absolutely sickest part, to me, is that Finland is producing these studies that they say show their approach doesn't work and might even be harmful, and then they're using it to advocate for other countries to take the same approach to care that Finland does.

Comparing notoriously harsh Finnish clinics to our American clinics is apples to oranges. Sure, Finnish researchers are probably playing methodological games, but you don't need to know that to see that their data has no bearing on gender affirming care, bc affirming care isn't offered in Finland.

At 18, the Finnish child is still expected to keep doing assessments at the youth clinic - but they're sick of it. They break away and get on the list for the adult gender clinic. By 19 they're able to start hormone therapy. Now: Would you be surprised if the Finnish kid has worse mental health?

If the American child is diagnosed with gender dysphoria and everyone agrees treatment is warranted, then by 18 the American child has undergone medical and social transition with the support of their parents and therapist. The Finnish child is still doing assessments.

The American child's assessment (done invisibly within therapy sessions) lasts a year or so, and then they have the opportunity to progress to medical interventions if child, parents, and doctors agree.

The Finnish child and their parents continue to have these sessions for years. High staff turnover means they don't get to know anyone or form lasting relationships with staff. No other support or treatment is offered.

In seperate sessions, the Finnish child's parents are berated and made to feel like they're to blame for having a trans kid. The American child's parents are spoken with and given information about trans children and a final say in any treatments their child might receive.

Imagine two trans kids, 12 years old. One is in Finland, one in the US. Every few month the Finnish child goes to the clinic where they're separated from their parents and barraged with uncomfortable questions. The American child sees a therapist who meets them where they are and doesn't judge.

I think this is really important, and I'm worried it's never going to filter into the mainstream: Finland is producing studies that their researchers claim cast doubt on gender affirming care for youth, but they hide the ways their idiosyncratic approach itself could be to blame.

ngl this might be a spicy take but "ai denialism" is indeed a thing-- people are refusing to acknowledge it as a part of our new reality, and believe ignoring it will simply be enoigh to make it go away.
