A good news story: a year old male mountain lion walking around a San Francisco neighborhood was successful tranquilized and relocated to wilderness, in part because the neighborhood helped out and had the right attitude.

network activity is way up today, presumably driven by ICE shooting Alex Pretti in Minneapolis. this hasn't been showing up in Bluesky Trending Topics. that is not intentional, and we are still trying to debug why it hasn't.

The hairdresser holds up the mirror so I can see the back of my haircut but she accidentally uses the mirror that reveals how you die. I see my 80-year-old self tumbling down a hill after slacklining for the 1st time. I never know how to react in these situations, so I just mumble "wow I love it"

Notably, this process of personalization, automating grudgework according to what is found through experience to be annoyingly repetitious, is something LLM's destroy. A vibecoder doesn't know what boilerplate is. A stenographer can't outsource their dictionary to an LLM.

In Preservation culture, asking payment for anything considered necessary for living (food, power sources, education, the feed, etc.) was considered outrageous, but asking payment for life-saving help was right up there with cannibalism.

When I was a kid watching Jurassic Park, I thought Ian Malcolm was a killjoy who didn't understand how cool it was to have real live dinosaurs. It's an understandable position for a nine year old. But some people never grew out of that mindset and unfortunately some of them have billions of dollars.

1. Did you know that Girl Scouts has, for a long time, accepted trans girls and nonbinary scouts? Trans kids are under attack. Every year, I make a thread of trans and nonbinary girl scouts you can get your cookies from. Lets get our cookies from them this year in solidarity!

So, the frog stopped the National Guard from coming to Portland, along with astute lawsuits by Oregon. Only part of what's happening, but hard to understate how fundamentally the Portland Frog changed perceptions and helped morale. Humor, imagination, courage, savvy.

GOOD NEWS! Researchers have shown Alzheimer’s disease can be REVERSED- not just prevented. Using a potent neuroprotective compound called P7C3-A20, they found RESTORING balance to a central cellular energy molecule (NAD+) not only PREVENTED disease features but REVERSED them, EVEN at late stages.

Jesus, can you hear me? Good, the comms are working. Now, you're gonna need to run if you want to evade those Roman soldiers. Hold down A to sprint. Go ahead and try it. ... Good work! You just might be the savior yet. Now pick up that AR-15 and let's do some target practice.

I remember when I saw the first season of Andor, it quietly blew my mind that there is never, in the entire Narkina 5 arc, a “so what’re you in for” scene. Even to be jokingly dismissed a la Shawshank Redemption We never find out what anyone—except Cassian—is there for Because *it doesn’t matter*

given how much cheaper touchscreens are than having to tool and manufacture physical switchgear, the safety data must be really bad for automakers to be voluntarily shifting back to real controls

I don't know why every app decided 2025 was the year they all needed to do their own version of Wrapped, but they need to read the goddamn room. The last thing I want to do is remember what happened this year.

Because people keep asking, the Story of The Lizard In That Dude's Leg. Some caveats: 1. This happened more than twenty years ago. There are no pictures. There was a small article in a local paper with, again, no pictures (I'm assuming that's what the producers of 9-1-1: LONE STAR found).

Related: People I know IRL who know what I do for a living often ask what they need to know about online safety for their about-to-be-teenagers, and there's a lot of answers, but the thing I always emphasize most is: under no circumstances should you ever threaten to take access away from them.

Journalist challenge: Use “Machine Learning” when you mean machine learning and “LLM” when you mean LLM. Ditch “AI” as a catch-all term, it’s not useful for readers and it helps companies trying to confuse the public by obscuring the roles played by different technologies. 🧪
