The Fall of Mark Welsh - Lawyers, Guns & Money
It’s about the domination of every social and political institution: During the short meeting at the Texas Capitol, Abbott peppered Welsh with questions about the comments Texas Scorecard had dug up, and about Welsh’s views on diversity, equity, and inclusion policies. Abbott was apparently unsatisfied by Welsh’s answers, according to five people briefed on the […]

I understand what about the capitalist hellscape pushes people to think this way, but I also think that deciding things are only worth knowing if they help at your job is needlessly giving the game away to those genuinely evil forces.

The same bit from the other end. My school made me take science classes, as part of being a well rounded student, and I loved it all so much I switched from pre-law to engineering. Very few 18 year olds know what they want, or understand the options. The "consumer" model is anti-person.

The way tech companies constantly do stuff that nobody asked for really tells you a lot about their bigger ideology. They tell themselves that you will like it over time. What they mean is you’ll learn to endure it, or you’ll give up. quality of UI is not actually anywhere on their radar

one thing about these arguments that college should be directly job-relevant is that it's REALLY HARD TO GAME OUT what specific skills will be needed in 4 years, let alone 10, 15, ESPECIALLY in technical fields. Even strictly instrumentally, critical thinking and broad coverage is a better answer.

In 2021, I founded Our Tallahassee with Bob Lotane to provide an alternative news source to the useless Tallahassee Democrat. We broke stories about the Chamber of Commerce and the extremism of our police chief and caught a lot of grief doing it. Bob died today. He was a good man. I miss him.

Scientists if you’re like “man I wish more people knew about X” then I humbly suggest hiring an artist to make a thing that communicates X and then put it into the world because it’s so fun, extremely “hell yeah” inducing, you gotta try it.

I had a weird sort of upbringing where my Beatles-fan mother made sure I knew Kris Kristofferson was a Rhodes scholar before I'd ever heard a song by him, but my dad had been roommates with Bob Morrison, who studied nuclear engineering but wrote "Looking for Love in All the Wrong Places."
