Contemplating the immensity of what Frederick Wiseman brought to documentary filmmaking is too dizzying a task to take on the same day he leaves us. Put it this way: he lived to be 96 while never ceasing to find new ways to see & film & show the world around him in all its complexity. A+ job on life

Requiescat, Frederick Wiseman. My man had Foucault-levels of things to say about the role of institutions in our lives, but was also a hugely talented filmmaker on top of it. If you have not seen Titicut Follies (1967), prioritise it: right out the gate, our guy was NOT here to fuck around

I graduated from the same high school Robert Duvall did, or was expelled from for reasons none of our teachers would tell us even though we begged. If anyone knows please put me out of my misery Also once we knew that seeing Apocalypse Now in tenth grade English meant we watched it as documentary

The second documentary begins with a woman on an ambulance trolley whose teeth have been punched through her face. So you can imagine when Mr Wiseman came into the room to discuss how some of the cases of stalking and abuse he filmed were actually pretty funny how it went over like a lead balloon

Pleased it took till my 18th or 19th press screening this festival (I have lost count, due to the delirium) for someone to hold up their phone on full brightness so we could all watch them scroll Instagram. We're being pretty professional this year!

What Epstein reveals is the ubiquitous sexual abuse of women & girls as a way for men to cement their friendships and demonstrate their status. It happens among billionaires, it happens among frat boys, it happens among preachers and tech workers and union contractors, because it happens among men.

Quite apart from the panelists’ un evidenced views that AI controlled cars will reduce congestion and support growth by “reducing the burden of employment red tape”. Small nod to the impact on cabbies’ and private hire drivers’ jobs and a simplistic expectation that driverless cars are safer. 😬

NOPE. NOT HAPPENING. This shit & those period tracking apps are all part of the same dystopian, predatory market that sells personal data to the highest bidder & makes it available to psychos who only see people - especially women - as tools. Don't let them fool you.

(1/11) If you live in NY, you’ve probably started seeing a new warning: “THIS PRICE WAS SET BY AN ALGORITHM USING YOUR PERSONAL DATA.” This mandatory disclosure went into effect late last year, and it’s the first attempt by a US state to grapple with a new generation of surveillance pricing.

Honestly this is so depressing. Such incredibly important assets, such parts of maintaining the world's access to information and reasonably accurate news, such as mechanism of British soft power and an illustration of values we claim to hold dear, even more important today since the US backed away.

My theory that filming in black and white blurs everything confirmed by coming out of a movie set in the 1700s (if the clothes and homes weren't clear, the flintlock pistol ought to have been) only to hear the people behind me discuss it being set in the 1910s thanks to a mention of the great war

Seeing one article about grey divorce provides the tangential excuse to tell you all a joke! A couple in their nineties walk into a lawyer's office. He asks why they're there and they say, "We want a divorce." The lawyer is astonished. "But you've been married 70 years! Why get a divorce now?"

Head-On (Gegen die Wand) is one of those movies that pulls off a twist so shocking you spend the rest of your movie in that shock, as things spiral out in ways absolutely unforeseen, and the fact it locks eyes with the abyss without falling in is extraordinarily rare. I love it so much
