I'd wear a helmet if I was a fast cyclist, but at 12-14mph there's not much point and I prefer not to. If it was really about safety, people would wear a helmet when driving or walking too - both have significant risks of head injuries.

What about the physical enormity of the US? Does that force people to drive more? No, it doesn't. Canada is an even more spacious country, and residents drive a lot less (and are <1/2 as likely to die in a crash).

Stationary phone distraction isn’t harmless — the evidence is clear. It impairs hazard detection and reaction time, with effects lasting well beyond the interaction. This is road danger and it can (and does) have fatal consequences. Academic research strongly backs it (see pic). Enforcement matters.
