We initially designed the protected cycle infrastructure to include the RBKC side of Bayswater Road. Not surprising but nonetheless a depressing reply came back: "Stepped tracks and bus stop by-passes are just not something that is supported in RBKC currently." 1/

Interesting thoughts here. However fragmented and sometimes poor public transport affects anyone who doesn't drive. The thought that it would impede someone's rehabilitation is a very motocentric approach. Saying someone needs a car is unimaginative. They could get a different job for example.

So it is NOT "cycle lanes". And if you want a faster, more efficient bus service, you have to have more bus lanes, which means removing road space from general traffic - mainly cars, vans, and lorries. 5./

Re-the current trope that buses are moving slower because of "cycle lanes": IF (and it's worthwhile examining the evidence) buses are going slower - by about 1 mph which is hardly noticeable for most travellers - the reason is not cycle lanes because: Firstly, there are very few kerb separated 1./

When Hackney inexplicably redesigned Downham Road without a bike lane, we told them it would end up with people cycling on the pavement. On a rainy December evening this is the result. We need to learn from this and do better.
