‘Quality of life’ isn’t a big house, luxury goods or a fancy car. It’s being able to cycle your kids on safe streets or run side by side down peaceful roads with your friends. Everyone can & should have this.

Vision zero takes account of everyone being capable of making mistakes, and the system takes account of that so a mistake by a child crossing a road or by someone driving along it does not result in death or injury. Hence road rules like speed limits. 💯 this 👇

As @ianwalker.bsky.social mentions in the video, richer → more driving. The census records the number of cars/vans every household has access to, which we can split by deprivation 'decile'. Consistently, the more deprived an area is, the less household access to private vehicles. [2/8]

This is a great data visualisation. It clearly shows why policy interventions that support/subsidise driving tend to not just miss an opportunity to reduce inequality, they are likely to entrench inequality, because those in the most deprived areas will derive the least benefit.

All meaningful schemes which significantly challenges the status quo will receive some significant backlash. Until fairly recently, most cycle schemes didn’t receive significant backlash because authorities weren’t bold enough to implement proper schemes that will bring about the real change needed.

It's a bit depressing that in 2026, a Labour leader is promising to block a congestion charge. I have no particular knowledge of the Glasgow plan, but history shows us that in almost every case, congestion charges work for basically everyone.

The stories of people seriously injured in crashes with vehicles being driven selfishly, without due care should be told and repeated until everyone understands the responsibility of driving a car, van or lorry. Where is the outcry at the death and long term injury caused by people driving?

A few years ago my dad got hit by a van when out cycling. He was almost killed and left permanently disabled due to 3 broken vertebre. The bloke who did it was speeding and fled the scene. Multiple previous offences. He served less than a year in prison. My dad still cant walk longer distances.

Any time in the past few decades was the best time to decarbonise & end our reliance on fossil fuels. We didn’t. The next best time is now.

Deep in the Government’s new integrated transport strategy is a truth at odds with the rhetoric you hear in the media: driving a car has gotten cheaper in real terms, while public transport has gotten more expensive.
