One of the most important things I learned in grad school was that there is a portion of the population who are anti-knowledge and will deny any evidence that threatens their identity. We should have kept these folks as far away from any public policy position as possible.

I'd really like to see leadership calling for impeachment and removal, regardless of whether they have the votes to get it done. Same way we called for marriage equality before we had the votes. A leader's job is to lead. If a genocidal threat isn't impeachable, then nothing is.

just to be clear, everyone, when 8 pm EDT comes and goes, regardless of what does or does not happen, the president still threatened genocide and war crimes and we should still impeach, arrest, and try him

It is a matter of restraint and norms that Congress has not done this before. But all it takes is the political will. If you really, truly believe removing the president from office is the all-consuming existential priority, you have to be willing to not blink first, even if the pain is immense.

If you really want to game out the confrontation, taking this last point seriously is how Congress can force a president from office even if supermajorities are unobtainable. The power of the purse is the ultimate power. Not one dime for a tyrant, demand he resign or else *nothing* gets funded.

This is really good as well. So far Ted Lieu, Chris Murphy, and Elissa Slotkin making this point with crystal clarity. More Dems need to do this.

I've now seen several posts from Democratic US Senators and House Reps calling for Congress to return to DC, and my only reaction to seeing these is: Do it. Just get on a plane and go back to DC. The House is in Recess, not adjourned. There was a pro forma session today. Go. Lead by example.

I hate the too-cool-for-school attitude of dismissing this with a "but they won't." That is surrendering in advance. The pressure should be put on them, the message should be unrelenting that this is what must be done and they're the ones refusing to do it. Don't act like they don't have agency.

It's not even that he's right, it's that he's closer to meeting the moment than half of elected Democrats.

Now do you see it? How the economic justice stuff is almost always adopted because it’s the most conflict averse, generic, broadly unobjectionable critique you can make? How it’s been corrosive that the left and the center are often in a weird sort of concord that this is the avenue to attack Trump?

To conservatives who’ve objected when some of us have suggested Trump is a fascist, and who’ve complained when some us point out that much of real existing American conservatism has devolved into fascism, if you’re silent about Trump’s threat of genocide you’re proving the point you’ve objected to.

I don't know if we can stop the terrible things that are happening. But I do know that we can commit ourselves as individuals and communities and societies to seek justice for as long as it takes.
