Look what came for me at the library today: Gou Tanabe's manga adaptation of HP Lovecraft's The Shadow Out of Time. Even if it's not one of my favorite Lovecraft stories, I know it'll be interesting to read as a manga. #HorrorSky #BookSky

I don't like working extra hours (who does?). I don't like having less time for me after a long day at the office. But it beats having to cram more work into the next eight hour day. And every minute I work extra, I get another minute of PTO. And given my summer plans, that's not a bad deal for me.

I won't claim to have subverted character tropes in any terribly meaningful way. My main character is a small, mixed-raced woman in what's essentially a fantasy-horror-western set in the Deep South. I think what I'm doing is unique, but I can point to clear antecedents. #HorrorWritersChat

Erica again. I wanted a trans character where her story doesn't revolve around her transition. At the time I felt so much trans rep in media almost seemed to define their characters by their transition, and never let them live by their identity. So that's what I wanted for her; #HorrorWritersChat

Q4: #HorrorWritersChat In my retelling of the Medusa myth (one where my Medusa is black and does follow the assault origin), I make her curse more of a protection granted by Athena to turn those to stone who would do her harm. Medusa is soon labeled a witch and monster.

#HorrorWritersChat Q4: A bit off topic, but I try to do more nuanced things with mental illness. When I bring it up it isn't in the classic horror trope way, it's a more sympathetic destigmatized topic. Because of how dementia has touched my life, I feel the need to do better.

#HorrorWritersChat I try to avoid tropes altogether. I prefer to look at a scenario from odd angles. That way, I see something other than the usual. Here's one trope I've twisted: The older woman as invisible. I love watching people who take such women for granted get theirs in the end.

Erica from A Survivor's Eye is a trans woman who works at her local cinema whilst also attending group therapy to help her come to terms with the serial killer she survived. Erica started as a throwaway character as part of a flashback, but she slowly became a full main character #HorrorWritersChat

#HorrorWritersChat I relate mostly to sexism & misogyny. Many of my stories are straight female revenge stories. I like writing them & they're cathartic. I've experienced some of what I've written about so I have my own expression. I also relate to LGBTQ+ but those stories are women's fiction.

#HorrorWritersChat Well that’s a tricky one. I fear I am complicit in relying on stereotypes for characters at times, due to not having 1st hand experience with their worlds. I just try to write characters as people and using specific race/sexuality if plot relevant. Crap answer I know!

One trope I subvert is that my mentally ill characters are generally protagonists rather than villains. People who are mentally ill are far more likely to be the victims of violence than the perpetrators of it, and it's time that horror caught up with this. #HorrorWritersChat

I am a big fan of cynics and people who feel defeated finding reason to hope again, and having that drive their late-story changes. Finding that strength to fight when you thought there was nothing left worth fighting for and realizing you were wrong is everything. #HorrorWritersChat

I mean I write psychological Horror, #Horrorwriterschat, my horrors are very real. I do not write homophobia or racism. But I have written post natal psychosis and depression, and historical horror in 72 Hours and Woman in White. I've written systemic othering in 72 Hours. And there are prisons

In LWF, I mainly explore patriarchal oppression and ableism, although the cult is also homophobic and we do see touches of that. I have the most direct experience with misogyny and ableism, so that's where I tend to lean. #HorrorWritersChat
