If I have learnt one thing from many years of talking to the cunning folk of Hookland it is of the importance of knowing from which direction evil travels. –

No word works harder in the English language than ghost. This is why I delight in more intimate, complex words for the spectral, for spirits we may encounter. I am especially fond of the Hookland dialect word 'prigest' – the spirit that stands beside as a friend. –

How do you stay cool in Hookland? You visit a parish church and become part of its congregation of shades. You climb into a portal tomb and lie you back against its cooling stone as you listen to the heatless whispers of the ancestral dead.

I quite like the idea of gifts, whether physical or a 'power' of some kind. They only last as long as the person does as they agreed to. If not, the gift changes into an affliction. This would be great for a dark comedy ...

They'd not touched the child. Not fed her, not given her water. Or if they did, her little body couldn't process it. The mother stood by, numb. The father drank. The teenage son played dice with a tiny shadow. Warm fairy poison circled inside them all. Waiting, waiting, to unite.

Yet condition wasn't discussed. So while its mother could have it, hold it, its senses remained forever in lands of rusted skies, starving grass and keening trees. It would scream, yes, but never age, never die, never want for food or drink. A boon, truly, so why was she so angry?

The fairy returned the child exactly as promised. A promise of return, not condition. She watched the girl, adorable in pixie outfit, held up a purse to her mother. “Look, Mummy, magic!” The mother played along. “Go on then, cast your spell.” "Dust to dust," murmured the fairy.

Hi, I'm Steph, writer of folk horror, gothic, postapocalyptic etc etc. Fairies. They've always appeared too 'glittery' & saccharine for me. Perhaps that's why we should be afraid of them. You think they're all innocent, then they suck you in, & before you know it you're a toad.
