It would depend on the specific setting. Anything can be terrifying depending on the situation, after all. But I tend to avoid stories with parasitic creatures (both scary and sad; the creature is usually just trying to survive) and maggots (despite putting them in my novella) #HorrorWritersChat

Insects are the most common answer here, but I think pigs and chickens are very effective in horror, not least because they will eat pretty much anything and they're often overlooked unless attention is drawn to them. Rabbits are also very good in horror (my personal favourite)🐇 #HorrorWritersChat

Fell down a rabbit hole when researching evolutions of idioms, and what I've found has made the story richer! My horror WIP is set in the late 1500s; 'curiosity killed the cat' becomes 'care kills the cat'. The differing language is fun to use intentionally to enhance the setting👁️ #HorrorAuthor 🩸📚💙

In Hawthorne House, the house itself! The girls antagonise each other; in part two, Rosalyn herself could be an antagonist. In my WIP, the witch is the main antagonising force, though in the poems from the witch's POV, the main character also counts in a way, as does the cat. 🖤 #HorrorWritersChat

I've found that my style tends towards poetic & fairytale-esque; I write stories & settings where the atmosphere is a disturbing ambiance that steadily increases. I focus on small details/descriptions; the way leaves blow, a patina on metal, the specific creak of a boot on wood... #HorrorWritersChat

I think the most prominent 'reality' I utilise in my writing is the assumption/systematic perpetuation that children are not people. The children I write are just as capable of emotions and are usually the narrators; children are often treated as accessories. I do the opposite. #HorrorWritersChat

I match music to the story, especially since I tend to listen to music whilst editing. Stories with cyclic elements get tracks that loop easily, a sad short story gets a despondent track (eg:Jack Splatter(Alice Madness Returns)), elements may reflect things the characters hear... #HorrorWritersChat

There is no 'end' to dehumanisation aside from total oblivion. Someone or something can be pretty much endlessly dehumanised as long as there is something there in the first place, including a lack of consciousness, will, or body...The answer re: 'completion' is potentially never. #HorrorWritersChat

That's... a very broad question. I already do this in one of my WIPs; a short story collection set in Victorian London, focused around dolls and childhood. It's not unanimous or anything, but many of my male characters fear breaking a (genuinely made) promise, unintentionally made (or broken) or not. Doing so would show that they don't know themself as well as they think they do; it all ties back to perception of the self. #HorrorWritersChat
