There are times humanity is truly impressive, whether it’s a historic mission to space, or the time my gf’s cat was about to throw up and I picked her up and raced over to hold her over the toilet so we didn’t have to clean anything up.

I don’t often feel lonely but I do find my mood picks up when I go out and am around people. I know not everyone can always do that but if you can, it helps. It also helps with writing. The thing my newspaper editor used to tell us rings true: there’s no news in the newsroom.

I don’t do a lot of physical isolation. Most of my stories are set in cities and towns. But I often feature characters that are sort of isolated from humanity, and I’ve noticed I play that up by giving them unnatural/exaggerated speech patterns.

Good question. As much as I like environmental isolation a la The Thing, I’ll rarely say no to an “outsider in an isolated community” story.

Hi
#HorrorWritersChat
community. Tom Coombe here, writer of weird/apocalyptic/sometimes religious horror. My pick for book and movie would be the same, even though they are actually very different, if that makes sense.

I'm not sure where this obsession with "good decision making" in books/movies/TV shows comes from but it seems like a miserable way to approach works of fiction.

I’m reading a book now where there’s an important, inciting incident and character introduction in the prologue and if you skipped it the entire book would sort of fall apart.

SURPRISE RELEASE! THE CORPSE PRIEST is out today! This is a strange beast of a novella, a bloody cocktail of sword & sorcery, Ligottian pessimism, and cosmic horror. I’m going to talk a little about how this release came to be, inspirations, and more—SO PREPARE FOR A THREAD!!!

Fester's Quest, which my mom got me because I liked Charles Addams cartoons. None of those cartoons, however, involved you very slowly truding through a neighborhood taking 20 minutes to kill a blob with a musket.

I think a lot of my characters are "imprisoned" in one way or another by their circumstances, even if they aren't physically locked up.

Hi everyone. Tom Coombe here, writer of many short horror works. Imprisonment is one area where my inclination to avoid happy endings kind of fades. A prison story that doesn't involve some sort of escape (even if it's the kind achieved in "Brazil") isn't one I want to explore.

My hankerings usually depend on whatever ideas I want to visit/revisit, rather than the seasons. I'm currently reworking an old story about a moon-worshipping cult at a 1990s college and trying my hand at horror-fantasy.
