This is something I'm wrestling with. I'm inclined to think that the reader must know the storm is coming before the characters do, but also the book should make it likely that the reader has misdiagnosed the nature of the storm. Oh, you think it's gonna rain? Just watch. #HorrorWritersChat

In my most recent manuscript, the weather and the protagonist are almost as one. Not in a "control the weather" sense, but in the sense that they tend to mirror one another. I don’t know whether it’s just a matter of the requirements of the genre, but as I’m working on this historical fiction piece, I find myself writing chapters that are about 30% longer than my usual chapters.

Okay, so as of about 1pm Eastern, I’ve formally started work on a new book. And, of all things, it’s an historical fiction mystery novel.

The older I get, the less I know.

In the mid-aughts, I bought a bootleg 2x1 of The Devils and Salo in Mexico City. The copies were low-res, scratched, with scenes frozen or missing. Especially The Devils, which came w. intrusively placed Russian subtitles. I was overjoyed watching it on Criterion in 2024. This will be better.

Was in the 100s when we got back. Circuit broke and the fans had been out on the first floor for a day. Turned everything back on. No idea how hot it is in the house, but my laptop isn’t happy. I’ve only got 4 chapters left to write. So, I’m sweating, writing, and have a ballgame on the radio.

Back from 80 degree weather in the mountains to 101 degree weather by the river. But, I’ve now only got four chapters left to write for the new book and I’ve got a map, character sketches, and some scenarios ready for the next one.

Where I am.

Headed to the mountains. It's too damn hot along the river. Was 103 degrees yesterday. Will be a chance to take photos and write longhand.

Just wrote 5,000 words and I'm exhausted. Gonna watch a movie or something.

One of the things I love about writing is that you never know where it's going to take you.
