Some writing advice I've found useful is to pretend you're writing to one reader. This helps lower the expectations for how many people will read your book.

I also struggle with writing an unreliable narrator. It's something I want to work on, though. I had a prompt during one of my Substack writing challenges I do where I told others to do an unreliable narrator, and that provided some excellent examples.

The introvert in me feels weird continually hawking my collection. The "guy who needs some extra cash for dental work right now" in me tells the introvert to shut up.

#HorrorWritersChat The characters themselves do all of the deceiving. I frequently employ unreliable narrators. It’s far more entertaining to deceive the reader.

#HorrorWritersChat My favourite liar archetype is the character that is being helpful, but actually, they were the monster all along. I have that in a few of my stories. I like turning the tables oh, you thought you knew who the monster was? Guess again.

#HorrorWritersChat Q4: In horror, I love the "I'll tell you whatever I know you want to hear" liar. They can be sexy or manipulative or threatening or whatever! I love them all, because the opportunity to lay bare the unconscious desires of the opposing character is just delicious.
