On enforcement: Drones now require Remote ID (i.e., transponder). Some won't take off without. Police systems can find you QUICKLY. Some also self-enforce TFRs. You can physically fly without, esp. older units. Everyone flew safely for years before. But if they catch you without, bigger trouble.

All of this is to say that DHS is taking their war on civilians -- and especially on journalists -- to the sky. And "war" isn't that hyperbolic when you look at their gear. They're literally flying predator drones over large civilian population centers as super creepy surveillance.

In LA, most TV stations have helicopters. Not cheap, but flies above TFRs. Their overhead views helped me identify lies in DHS court filings! Reportedly, a DHS helicopter chased away a TV station helicopter during ICE raid in Ventura. To be clear, airspace is NOT supposed to work that way. Scary.

Chicago's main TFR is 15 nautical miles. That's radius, so 900x larger than each Los Angeles one. I've had an FAA remote pilot certificate (i.e., commercial drone license) for 8 years. Can't recall anything like what was just issued in Chicago. It's 12 days but can be extended like ones in LA.

At least initially in LA, two TFRs were requested by FBI, which as a result was only agency that could approve waivers. They appear to have unlawfully denied waivers to news orgs, using content-based reasons. LA's currently 0.5 nautical miles, centered at federal buildings in Downtown & Westwood.

FAA has issued MASSIVE temporary flight restriction which prohibits drones (i.e., photography) over Chicago. They did similar around federal buildings in Los Angeles since June protests, but really no comparison... Chicago's TFR covers 900x more area than ones in LA! 🧵👇 tfr.faa.gov/tfr3/?page=d...

Watching a Jane Goodall documentary. There’s a part where the chimps suffered a devastating polio outbreak in Gombe. The outbreak started in humans. She and her team vaccinated the chimps because the vaccines save lives. Unreal that our HHS Secretary is actively trying to convince us otherwise.

This is likely widespread. I have seen instructions from inside HHS for away messages to say “Democratic Senators are blocking its passage” re a continuing resolution, and that’s why the employee can’t respond.
