Borrowing from the library (physical or digital!) is free and supports authors and their careers, making it more likely they will get to publish more books. Pirating a book does none of this. It’s a purely selfish choice, and I wish people would just own that and stop pretending it’s noble.

I'm going to do a little thread on how the money from books works for traditionally published authors because people have questions, and this is always useful info to share IMO. First, a big disclaimer that every contract is different, and there are a million factors that can change things. 1/

Bookselling is like the most "people go to the store and buy what looks cool to them without a particular agenda" type business left, and your purchases have a huge influence on what is ordered, what is displayed, and what is recommended.

Literally buying one copy of a book at your local indie bookstore can mean the difference in whether they buy future books from that author.

I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

Some folks have brought this up in comments, but just saying... maybe we should ACTUALLY PAY ATTENTION to the multitude of studies showing COVID infections (even "mild" ones) cause brain changes and ongoing cognitive decline. We've been letting our young people get COVID over & over & over again.

I think that somewhere along the way something in Stephen Miller got fundamentally damaged. This is neither an excuse nor a mitigating factor; the dude is genuinely fucking evil and he and everything he stands for should be fought against and stopped. But he is something beyond mere sociopathy.

1. A landmark study was just published in The Journal of Pediatrics. It found a 68% reduction in suicidality for trans youth getting HRT. It also found only 7 of more than 400 stopped taking HRT... and of those that did, 4 still identified as gender-diverse. Transgender care saves lives.

I'm sitting there, hating the mindless game, hating myself for playing it, hating not being able to do anything else, but just hoping that it's mindless *enough* that I can put it down and start what i need to do when the dopamine hits.

I'm not ignoring a deadline. I'm hyper cognizant of it, I'm waking up in a cold sweat about it. I'm not doing things I'd rather do than work. I'm desperately wanting to start doing work I love and am good at, but can't begin, and instead loading up a flash game that's all I can manage to do.

God, a thousand times this. That's the thing with dopamine being tied to task initiation - there's a set of gears that won't - CAN'T - engage in my brain, but none of my problems are with analysis. I can be fully aware of all the necessary steps, and stressing about starting, and just... not.
