Remember when Lisa Demuth basically went on a "civility tour" after Hortman's assassination talking about how we needed to stop division and political violence? And then not even 6 months later she's bragging about inflaming those divisions, which resulted in political violence?

As a big, big fan of @olufemiotaiwo.bsky.social, this is obviously a great piece. But for me, it's telling that it begins with a historic comparison, since history's language is no longer useful. We're in a new era where past language—shame in particular, but civility, etc.—doesn't win the day.

While we should never forget that this was objectively hilarious, this story is also a serious warning about how AI is vulnerable to malicious training and prompts (although the prompts in this story made for great comedy) as well as the ease and authority with which LLMs can spread disinformation

AI is likely 10x more significant, impactful, and pervasive than the vast majority of people are aware. I say that as someone who has been involved in digital media for 20 years, and as someone who has been talking about American dystopia for over 8 years. It's like social x10. It's bonkers.

In terms of US politics, Bush v. Gore is the defining event of the century. It set the template: a ruthless right that instinctively seeks power & doesn't give a shit about rule of law...and a bunch of hapless, feckless octogenarian Dems worried about the good opinion of centrist opinion columnists.

The internet is fast becoming so choked with this, it'll be unusable. We'll all be boats chugging blindly through the gloom and the muck, finding nothing, barely each other, uncertain what's true or even real anymore.
