Huzzah! Opening Day of Autumn ... do not think of the darkening days - enjoy the celebration of color!

The fancy sparrows are stopping by on their big trek south, and this morning these two showed up. White-crowned sparrows can winter in the southern U.S. down into Central America. These two decided the creek was for bathing and drinking! Adult in the creek and juvenile on the rock! #Birds 🪶

I'm back in my happy place - #Tasmania's central highlands. I was supposed to be here on #TasmanianDevil #fieldwork, but it got cancelled. As my flights were nonrefundable, I came anyway! So I'm just enjoying the incredible wildlife here for fun. There's heaps of snow, even in the rainforest ☃️🌲

Numbat. This small marsupial is known for its reddish coat, white stripes, and bushy tail. Unlike most marsupials, numbats are active by day, using their long sticky tongues to feast on thousands of termites daily🐜 Found in eucalyptus woodlands, they shelter in hollow logs and burrows for safety 🇦🇺

Puffleg seems to be a good name for a sparkle-bird with floofy white leggings. Lots of tropical birds are under-studied and this is one of them. They are common where found, but have unexplained breaks in their range. Sapphire-vented Puffleg, Zuroloma Preserve, Ecuador
