I think that universities are cutting grad programs because they’re seen as low-hanging fruit. I wish I could be a fly on the wall when those discussions are being had. I am almost sure that they aren’t taking the exploitation of students as cheap instructional labor into account.

I would also say that departments need to do a better job of communicating their strategic direction and programmatic needs. I see so many job postings that are so general that nobody can get a good feel for potential fit.

This is all of academia. I know of amazing candidates not hired bc they couldn’t teach the courses the department needed at the time. Yes, hard work puts you in the running but you have to apply at the right place right time. There are so many things that you can’t impact- luck is huge.
