today i have read some things that cite ME and in every single case i had forgotten saying this but its ok it turns out i did. having to check my own work to validate citations feels like a very clever form of torture

This thread brought a question to mind: I hear a lot about “hallucinated” journals and books, but are historians seeing the same but archival sources?

Just this past week I submitted a review of an article manuscript to a journal. I had to check a box stating that I did not use AI to generate my review. This is the brave new world AI is trying to make us live and work in.

i now feel pretty confident in my expertise in a few fields but no one, i mean really no one, can keep up with all of the literature on eg witchcraft, or French criminal justice history.

absolutely wild to see people out here saying that it is responsibility of peer reviewers to check for hallucinated references. it is hard enough to persuade people to read articles and provide reviews. expecting them to spend hours cross reffing literature is unreal.

FWIW, I don’t think the major problem in my field, or related ones, is that people need to move faster & produce more. I read a lot of papers as part of the job, and I’m increasingly convinced we’d benefit from fewer papers and better ones, not more mediocre work produced ever more “efficiently.”

Also: the purpose of scholarship is (broadly) for more people to know more things about the world, not for there to be more things in writing about the world. Scholarship is a conversation, and a lens, for *people*. More, faster publications will mean more noise, and less getting read/discussed.

Historical research does not need to be done faster or in greater volume for any social or intellectual purpose whatever; if anything, it needs to be done more slowly and deliberately than at present, by people allowed the training, time, space, and resources to do it that way.
