Being an assoc prof is hard because you finally have a killer research agenda and service obligations won't let you work on it. Also, higher ed is collapsing wholesale, stripped from within and without by greedy ideologues who see everything as a business deal and the humanities as worthless.

Every one of these propaganda centers struggles in the so-called marketplace of ideas. No surprise. They're drafting off the status of people they hate, subsidizing substandard intellectuals, and making slush funds for potato-faced jetski dealer legislators. Every normal person smells a fake.

Also of note, Iowa paid Chris Rufo—perhaps the leading propagandist for the current assault on higher ed, an unqualified hack and admitted fabulist—$34,000 to speak. It's embarrassing that any higher ed institution would invite him, especially when they are cutting departmental budgets.

Columbia faculty are proposing to reform Columbia's Board of Trustees with "competitive direct elections" to increase transparency & to reinforce shared governance. Columbia AAUP's Jean Howard claims it is necessary to amend this "unusually insular & inward facing" Board. @aaupcu.bsky.social

Honest question - how do people actually pay the open access fees. If the fee is 3500 and you first author five articles a year, that's 17,500. Over 5 years that's 87,500. Sure, some is written into a grant or from indirects - but who has that kind of indirect account that they can spend on fees?
