There are stories from all over about universities' dismantling of the humanities. I have a small but dismaying data point from my university to contribute to the discourse. Harvard University now has NO assistant professors of English. That's how long it has been since we were allowed to hire.

Princeton English might now have only one and has not been able to promote an assistant to associate with tenure in a decade.

Tuition is flat, enrollment and graduation rates are stable or up, outcomes are generally good, most students feel comfortable expressing their views on campus. Political control is intense and science is under threat. The centrist account of higher ed doesn’t have the story right.

MIT is doing less research and enrolling fewer graduate students as a result of federal actions, the university president warned. Federally funded research on campus is down more than 20 percent compared to this time last year, she said.
