As someone who has made the decision to work on games with odd & hard to acquire components, my advice to other designers is simply: Don't.

Someone at a convention once said to a friend who was working the booth with me that he liked my work but he wasn't going to buy anything because "Chris is successful enough and doesn't need my money". Anyway I'm no longer a full time game designer because I didn't make enough money to live.

One piece of advice I would give to all non-self publishing designers: Reach out to other designers your potential publisher has worked with in the past. Hearing about how smoothly the process went, how well they communicated, and things they wished they'd had in their contracts can go a long way!

A publisher apologized to me recently, saying they were "really really sorry for the delay" in their response times. I'd emailed just over a month ago. While I appreciate the sentiment & believe it was sincere, my experience has been the majority of publishers lay somewhere between slow to glacial.

At Wizards, we learned from painful experience that the game designers in R&D could look at sketches and diagrams and evaluate a game proposal without it looking nice. Everyone from other departments needed the game proposal to look nice or else they'd get caught up critiquing the visuals.

Now that I have a game about mechs forthcoming, I can finally write this off as a business expense!

Met some local designers the other day and I forgot just how overprotective newer designers are of their games - one asked if he needs a lawyer! Easy to forget how common a concern that is. And it only holds games back from getting the love & attention they deserve from a variety of playtesters

While I'm more of a real-robot kinda guy, this looks fucking rad as all hell. Sick-ass robots deserve more time in the limelight in our industry and I am so happy Quentin is making it happen!

I think my favorite thing about racing as a genre is the simplicity of it all. In too many games we finish playing and have to do varying degrees of homework before we can see who really won. But in a racing game? The race usually ends and you immediately *know.* Players just get it.

The vast majority of the time, I use pre-made icons and stock art for my prototypes. It saves time + makes changes painless But on rare occasion adding some hand-crafted art can go a long way towards helping your players get the vibes your game is going for. What vibes do these racers give off?
