#NoContractNoCoffee
with us: DON'T BUY STARBUCKS for the duration of our open-ended ULP strike! $SBUX

Anyway, I think Dems are right to believe subsidy expiration, because many Americans will suffer and maybe die, is going to hurt Republicans in the midterms. A less harmful way to do well in elections, though, is to offer voters a compelling vision for why they should vote, affirmatively, for you.

If Dems accept this deal, it will help the GOP cement the following ideas into the public conscience over the coming 4 weeks: -Shutdown was Dems fault/responsibility -They did it for nothing -They caved to Trump Having accepted responsibility, it will also cripple them in the follow up debate.

It's also unfortunate how cowed the "Medicare for All" program is, because if it was assertive, it would be a good counter to this. If an insurance company can't negotiate prices, why would the little guy? Why won't prices just go up across the board because now everyone knows he has extra money?

Or maybe Senate Democrats are aware of how pissed off voters will be? This alleged deal guarantees a BILLION dollars in spending for security and police at the Capitol, and then a pinky promise to hold a vote on ACA subsidies that will surely lose. Not sure a billion will even be enough but OK.

The AFL-CIO should start throwing some money towards labor journalism. If it was done right (i.e. with them accepting that journalists must have full editorial control over whatâs published, whether or not union leaders like what they have to say) it could really have such a hugely positive impact

one of my spicy takes, for example, is that limits on strikes are unconstitutional under the 13th Amendment, because if we have a right to be free from forced labor, we must necessarily have a right to stop working and negotiate the conditions of our labor
