When you go to an open mic night, you realize the point of art is not really to be a fancy person whose name everybody knows. Amateur singers & poets with day jobs deliver the most stirring & moving pieces. Their names may never be known & they may not care, the point was to share for someone.

Like am I not allowed to travel ever? Am I just supposed to be able to go (45 minutes from my home, I might add) whenever? People around me can’t drop everything to drive me. I’m so over the US’ puritanical drive to punish illness.

Intro post 🗣️ Hello! I’m Tia. I’m a 1st gen scholar with a PhD in psych. Trained as a behavioral neuroscientist, I broadly studied hippocampal dependent spatial navigation (how do we get from one place to the next?). My lab days are behind me but you can find me writing about cool science.

Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance. Each year, the trans community loses too many lives, especially trans women of color, to hate and violence. More than ever, we must stand by our trans family and support them, hold space for them, and insist the scapegoating and targeting stop. Now.

Something about Twitter that was so powerful was how somebody could talk about an experience being disabled and so many people around the world could respond saying OMG I am experiencing that! For a community so isolated, it was such a validating thing and I'm beginning to see it happen here.

Deleting twitter felt fine in the end but it’s hard to overstate how much it mattered in allowing me to make a career. It feels so silly to say.

Tip for our "leaders". Your op-ed about how "science shouldn't be political" isn't going to save us. It never has, and it certainly never will when the politicians reject evidence and counsel. Just don't write the op-ed, and do yourselves a world of good.
