You helped us stumble into a whole new journal club format! We will do more “cold reads” in future. Was a blast to go through this in real time with the group. Lots of discussion, mainly on what a similar phenotype would look like in mammalian cells (if it exists) and how to test. A real puzzle!

This story starts with a bonkers phenotype of eyeless planaria *generations* after ovo-1 dsRNA and ends on a mystery. Something maintains gene silencing across generations, and it's not the input dsRNA, not an RdRP (planarians don't have one), not transcription, but certainly post-transcription. 2/

I'm often asked about double-blind review. One of my arguments against it was I was unconvinced you could mask author identity effectively and soon computers would be able to figure it out anyway. Is soon now?

New study (reporting very impressive results) shows AI can infer identity from posts alone. Can this tool also de-anonymize the reviewers of your paper? (assuming they didn't use AI to write their reviews)

Transgenerational epigenetic inheritance without RdRP...! Lack of RdRP was one reason people argued epigenetic phenomena in nematodes (which do have RdRP) are fascinating but maybe not relevant to other animals (which don't have RdRP). But now....

It was a very cool experiment! The author-centric perspective makes a lot of sense. An important next step is to benchmark multiple AI review platforms. Maybe this can also pave the way for benchmarking human peer review across journals and defining "quality features" of the peer review process.
