It is important for us to acknowledge every death caused by #ICELawlessness. This includes the murder of Keith Porter, Renee Good, Silverio Villegas Gonzalez, and at least 33 others who died in #ICE detention.

There’s a big story everyone is missing—but this article hits on it. We aren’t just seeing public health dismantled bc we’ve been taken over by conspiracy theorists and lunatics. What we’re really seeing is the giant, predatory, underegulated wellness industry come to Washington.

Right now, the wellness industry is largely accepted and surprisingly trusted. It thrives off of our broken healthcare system. You don’t get this kind of acceptance of junk science without deep, deep structural problems. But it’s chock full of grift.

Wellness as an industry far outpaces pharmaceuticals in terms of value. It’s because pharmaceutical companies have to show that their products work and get them approved. Wellness is the Wild West.

Big Wellness benefits from two big lies: 1) False promises people that their health is hackable with lifestyle, dietary, and supplement changes—forget genetics, environment, socioeconomic status. 2) A David and Goliath narrative that they’re selling stuff men in suits don’t want you to know about.

It targets parents, specifically. It preys on our anxieties about our children. Where doctors and experts offer uncertainty, Big Wellness offers certainty. More people need to be aware of how fucked up and money-hungry the industry is. “Big Wellness” isn’t even in our lexicon. It needs to be.

This industry has been essential to the rise of American fascism. It helped rewrite the history of COVID after Biden’s election and it’s fully enmeshed itself in MAGA with Kennedy’s MAHA movement. Its promise of hackable health fits neatly into the eugenicist worldview. Call it a modern iteration.

The idea that health equals virtue is extremely dangerous. Who doesn’t like natural foods and clean water? But the idea that if you’re fat or sick or disabled, it’s your fault is dehumanizing and wrong. We’re all only ever one serious illness or accident away from disability. And life is random.

The wellness industry also ties in with fascist aesthetics. Fit, able-bodied (white) people. Ironically, the America Big Wellness is helping to create is more likely to shorten lifespans as vaccine access and health insurance are stripped away and polluters deregulated. It’s really a death cult.

Wellness has traditionally been a liberal thing. Crunchy granola folks out in California. That’s why its alignment with Trumpism—especially at the height of the pandemic—was so devastating. It allowed the far-right to make inroads in previously impervious communities.

I think a big reason a lot of people just kinda accept Big Wellness is because they don’t see the industry for what it really is: A major fucking industry. They simply do not know it’s bigger than Big Pharma—and a lot less regulated (which, again, is probably why it’s so big). It needs regulation

The easiest grift in the world is branding a supplement or protein powder or whatever. Influencers are big in this sphere. The whole thing is just fucked. I’ve long warned to do a big report about wellness but there’s so much rotten about the industry, it’s hard to know where to begin.
