Six years ago today, George Floyd was murdered on camera, and this collective trauma catalyzed a movement. Progress has not been straightforward, and in many ways we've gone backwards. But we know the moral arc of the universe bends towards justice.

We still don’t know exactly what caused the fire and subsequent explosions at a Staten Island shipyard tonight. What we do know is that a life was lost, dozens of firefighters have been injured, and that the selfless bravery of first responders helped to save lives.

Little progress comes without protest—even some protests against Intro 175-B could have been limited if it became law, stripping some fundamental rights in the name of defending others. Thankfully the veto was sustained. We can protect safety without prohibiting speech.

The federal government thinks it's above the law—but New York City won't stand for that. Federal agents have repeatedly, belligerently violated New Yorkers' due process rights. Today—despite a judge prohibiting non-criminal arrests in New York City immigration courts—ICE broke the law again.

People struggling with substance use disorder must be treated as human beings in need of support. So supportive housing, like the soon-to-be-expanded Anchor House, is vital. We owe it to those who lost their lives to reduce the harm wrought on their communities by this epidemic.

We're in an affordability crisis, and the Rent Guidelines Board must meet the moment with a rent freeze. There may be smaller owners struggling, but the city and state should improve access to support for them—without adding undue burdens on tenants who simply cannot pay more.

As much as MAGA dehumanizes immigrants, we have to re-humanize our neighbors, uplifting their stories. Stories of people like Allan Dabrio Marrero and his family. Allan was wrongfully detained at a routine Green Card hearing. Now he's free, we must use our pain to free others.

All of us must push back against all forms of hate, including antisemitism. Everyone should have the right to be who they are, worship who they worship, and walk freely. There are some who wish to make it so America can hate again and freely—we must form a united front against that.

People often react to Tourette Syndrome before they understand. For many kids—like the Public Advocate—that starts early. Instead of support, they get punished. Instead of empathy, embarrassment. Our newly passed Tourette Syndrome Awareness Month resolution will change this.

This is devastating. We mourn for this 9-year-old child and for his family. His tragic death leaves a painful mark on his community and the city as a whole. May his memory be a blessing—and a call to do everything in our power to prevent traffic violence.

It's May Day in New York City. Citywide, workers are mobilizing to demand economic justice, safeguard our rights, and protect our communities. The workers united will never be defeated—even in the face of technocracy, oligarchy, and fascism.
