My suspicion is age verification really is an insidious way to establish a system of digital ID, surveilance of internet traffic and suppression of unwanted sources, but I don't believe it even nominally fixes a real problem. Nothing should be age verified, even in principle.

Setting aside the discussion of peoples' rights (which I think also multiply vindicate this position), distorting this ecosystem is simply criminally reckless. We have tried the world where children can de facto access any part of the internet they wish, and it just produced better adults

shows that they are *significantly* better than older generations with greater access primarily to age-restricted and heavily curated and sanitised sources via tv, and the only generation entirely preceding internet access is also the only one comprehensively falling for fascism.

My humble suggestion about age verification is that we've gone through two decades of widespread access to a mostly unregulated internet where children had free access to most sources, including adult sources, and everything we know about younger political demographics
